WR Evan Spencer Commits to the Buckeyes for 2011

Ohio State has picked up two very good recruits this past week with the addition of both wide receiver Evan Spencer and nationally #1 quarterback Braxton Miller for their 2011 class. Spencer, out of Vernon Hills, IL, is a legacy recruit as his father Tim Spencer is a past standout player (tailback) and coach for the Buckeyes. (He now coaches for the Chicago Bears) Spencer is the first receiver for the class and becomes the 13th recruit overall. He had offers from Notre Dame, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Purdue, Arkansas, Oregon and Illinois to name a few.

This 2011 class for Ohio State should be complete with a total of 20 to 22 recruits. Head Coach Jim Tressel and the staff for Ohio State generally do better recruiting early in the process than with players that wait until the final days in January and February. So the early commitments are a big help to their efforts in putting together a 2011 class. Spencer was considered a lock for the Buckeyes due to his family connections to the program. Recruiting services have Spender within the Top 150 to 200 recruits nationally ranked.

Spencer is currently 6’1” and 185 lbs, a bigger possession receiver that will be needed with the current set of receivers moving on after graduation over the next one to two seasons. He doesn’t lack speed as he has been timed at 4.43 in the 40 yard dash. He is also a very good student with a 25 ACT score. Spencer is looking forward to joining the Buckeye family that his father has been a part of for so many years. He grew up in Columbus Ohio and only moved to Chicago when his father took the coaching position with the Bears organization.
