DJ Durkin progressed from a BGSU Graduate Assistant to the Maryland Head Coach

DJ Durkin

DJ Durkin got his start as an graduate assistant in 2001 under Urban Meyer at BGSU after playing outside linebacker for Bowling Green.

He also coached under Meyer at the University of Florida as a defensive coordinator from 2010 to 2014 before taking the Michigan defensive coordinator position in 2015.

In 2015, Durkin held Maryland to 105 yards in a Michigan 28-0 victory. The win made the Terrapins take notice and later offer him the head coaching job.

In 2016 Durkin took over the Maryland program after they had gone 5-11 in conference play over two years since joining the Big 10.

Durkin was able to win 6 games in 2016 but also brought in a top 20 recruiting class for the first time in school history. In 2012 he was voted the Rivals.com Recruiter of the Year for his strong recruiting efforts so the great Maryland class was no surprise.

2017 has seen three victories and one loss. Maryland beat Texas, Towson, and Minnesota while losing to UCF. But the real lose came in the form of 2 season ending injuries to starting quarterback Tyrrell Pigrome and backup Kasim Hill. The Terps are now playing their third string quarterback Max Bortenschlager.

Maryland has become a gritty team under Durkin, ranking in the top 25 nationally for run defense. They hope to test Ohio State’s running backs and defensive backs this weekend when they travel to Columbus. The game has a 4pm kickoff on FOX.
