The Buckeye players have an ardent fan base. They are probably one of the most recognized teams in all the country. Buckeyes are also still considered one of the contenders for the top spot in the game despite their loss to Virginia Tech last week.

The Kent state Golden Flashes on the other had, have had a pretty good run in the past but don’t play the level of competition or recruit the level of player that the Buckeyes do. Last week the Flashes went head to head with OSU in a nail biting game for about 10 minutes. This was the third meeting between the teams. It was over quickly.

The Buckeyes move ahead

The week before Ohio State had lost to Virginia Tech and when they came face to face with the Kent State Golden Flashes on September 13, they weren’t going to let off the gas for a second. After having lost a rare home game the Buckeyes plummeted 14 spots in the ranking and stormed severe criticism. Now was their time to get better mentally and nationally with an easy opponent at home.

The win staged a triumphant return for the Buckeyes. The win saw an unprecedented game time for many young players and freshman which usually is not the norm. J.T. Barett scored 6 touchdowns & practically led the Buckeyes to their victory himself. Barett also shares the rare title of being only the second player after Troy Smith in 2006, to collect 300 passing yards in a game.

Devin Smith, Sr. wide receiver & Michael Thomas, a sophomore wide receiver whose 50 and 63 yard touchdowns respectively made the crowd go wild have become the big play makers for 2014. Raekwon McMillan, a freshman line-backer led the game with 7 tackles in all. One of the motivating factors for the team was playing on home turf to a packed stadium. Since last season’s 76 point win against the Florida A&M Rattlers, this marked the first time the OSU team held their rivals scoreless at home.

What next?

For the Golden Flashes this was the second most lopsided loss after a 2002 game at Miami (Ohio). The team wore no. 54 stickers on their helmets in memory of Jason Bitsko, a fourth year junior who passed away unexpectedly this season. Hopefully better days are ahead for the team. Just to see how lopsided the game was, the first half took up almost 2 hours and OSU punted just once compared to the Flashes who did so 11 times.

The Buckeyes are set to face Cincinnati in the coming week.
