Ray Small in the Dog House One More Time

The start of Fall Camp at Ohio State brought news that Ray Small and his Glenville teammate Rob Rose would not be a part of the reduced 103 team roster entering camp. Speculation was that the two had not qualified academically but that the spots were left open for when they did.

Days later both Ray Small and Rob Rose were in camp after completing a summer course that made them eligible. This is a continued pattern for Small who has had troubles making team practices on time in the past and keeping his grade above the minimum requirements. Several years ago he lost the right to his jersey #4 and has worn #82 ever since, in addition to seeing his playing time reduced even though he remains one of the most explosive wide receivers on the team.

Both players are now in the Head Coach Jim Tressel’s dog house according to camp reports. Neither player is participating in team work but rather working separately during practice. And it appears Small’s role in the receiving rotation could be reduced as other players like freshman Duran Carter are turning heads with their play. The coaching staff has not made any permanent plans but placing too much faith in Small might be something they would rather not do with his inconsistent past.
