Ohio State Wide Receiver Depth Decent Even With Loses

Devier Posey Spring 2009

Ohio State Wide Receiver Depth Decent Even With Loses

Losing two veteran players like Brian Robiskie and Brian Hartline would set many college football programs back, but Ohio State is loaded with young talent that will step up this spring and take the field this fall to create explosive offensive plays for the Buckeyes. Ray Small, Dane Sanzenbacher, DeVier Posey and Taurian Washington are some of the names competing for the starting sports this spring.

By Steve Patterson

DeVier Posey Set to Start

Coach Darrell Hazell told the media after practice this past week that he likes the work ethic and the athletic ability of all the wide receivers in camp this spring. For instance, DeVier Posey has been showing why he got on the field as a freshman last year in practice this spring and should take over the possession receiver spot vacated by Robiskie.

Ray Small Returns

Ray Small has returned with a the passion to excel in his senior year with the Buckeyes. His first three years have been a little rocky with suspensions and losing his jersey number but he is practicing with the first team and demonstrating the promise that he had coming out of Glenville Cleveland three years ago. He had considered entering the NFL draft at times but wants to leave Ohio State as one of the good guys that stayed and contributed. Coach Hazell mentioned his consistent play this spring which could put Small on the field full-time come fall opposite Posey.

Sanzenbacher in the Slot

The slot position looks to be Sanzenbacher's at this time. He has battled some injuries during the spring but has been a consistent contributor since coming to Columbus from Central Catholic High School in Toledo. He has worked hard in the off-season to improve his timing with sophomore quarterback Terrelle Pryor. All the receivers are looking forward to a more pass oriented offense then was seen from Ohio State last year.

Now a junior, Sanzenbacher plans to take on more of a leadership role among the receivers with three new freshman and two sophomores in the mix. He feels that he has to really understand all aspects of the offense so he can assist the younger players when they come to him with questions. Ohio State should have a very productive year with leaders like Sanzenbacher on the field.
