The Big Ten Conference And Realignment

The NCAA's musical chairs act of the past two years have seen big shake-ups as major college football schools moved from one conference to another. For the most part, the Big Ten Conference led the way, adding Maryland, Rutgers and Nebraska to the itinerary, and the new divisions will change how Ohio State Football and other D-I programs operate. Instead of the Leaders and Legends divisions that were formed in 2011, the new Big Ten Conference will be divided geographically with the West and East divisions.

In the East division of the Big Ten Conference, the Ohio State Football program will share the ranks with the Indiana Hoosiers, the Maryland Terps, the arch-rival Michigan Wolverines, the Michigan State Spartans, the Penn State Nitany Lions, and the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. In the West, the Illinois Fighting Illini share a division with the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Minnesota Golden Gophers, the Nebraska Cornhuskers, the Northwestern Wildcats, the Purdue Boilermakers, and the Wisconsin Badgers.

Few sporting events in central Ohio create the buzz of the Ohio State football program. With one of the largest stadiums in the United States, the Horseshoe becomes its own municipality each time that the Buckeyes host a football game against a Big Ten opponent. Having forfeited a bowl game appearance, the Buckeye football 2013 schedule is now looking all the more attractive since the team is eager to prove that they again belong in the echelon of elite NCAA teams. The Ohio State Spring Game, a squad scrimmage of existing players and new recruits, is the first peep of the upcoming Buckeye football 2013 season and drew a large crowd as usual.

Urban Meyer and the Buckeye football staff closed out their 2013 class in great fashion getting most of their targeted players in the last week. They ranked up near the top with Michigan and the SEC teams that normally dominate the recruiting rankings. The fun started with safety Vonn Bell joining the Buckeyes followed by wide receivers James Clark and Dontre Wilson. They had to let a punter go to Florida when they ran out of room but were able to keep running back Ezekiel Elliot in the fold despite rumors that he was looking elsewhere. Elliot was the best recruit out of Missouri and promised the only running back position in the class. With Dontre Wilson playing running back in high school, Elliot got nervous and visited in-state Missouri a week before national letter of intent signing day.

The six foot six inch, 290 pound giant has made the decision to remain in his home state for his football career after high school.

Ohio State Fans Get A Glimpse Of The Future

A sneak peek at the future of Buckeyes football will come this weekend, as many of the verbally committed Ohio State recruits will play in one of the four All-American games.

Several other prospects that could be leaning toward OSU will also announce where they plan to play college ball during the weekend. This could make for a lot of optimistic Buckeyes fans, or it could lead to more misery.

Offense-Defense All-American Bowl
Sunday, December 30

The Offense-Defense All-American Bowl was held on December 30 in Houston's Reliant Stadium. Two future Buckeyes played in the game.

Ohio State fans have known they were gaining Jayme Thompson since April, 2011, but this game gave them the first chance to see the kid they hope will bring depth to a secondary that is losing its biggest play-maker. Thompson's big plays in the state championship game helped his Central Catholic High School to defeat Trotwood-Madison for the trophy.

Taivon Jacobs, a Buckeyes commitment from Maryland, also played in the game.

Under Armour All-America Game
Friday, January 4 at 5 p.m. ET

The Under Armour All-America Game is only in its sixth year, but it was grown to include some of the most talented high school players in the country and is known for being a heck of a game.

The highlight of this game for Ohio State fans will be that five future Buckeyes are all suiting up for Team Nitro. This quintet includes defensive end Joey Bosa, cornerback Cam Burrows, WR/ATH Jalin Marshall, TE Marcus Baugh and DB Gareon Conley.

In addition, ILB Trey Johnson plans to officially commit during the game. Many feel he is leaning toward State, where he could be on the field as soon as 2013.

The game will also showcase OL Logan Tuley-Tillman who burned his Ohio State letter and committed to Michigan. DE Robert Nkemdiche, the No. 1 ranked player in the country will also be playing.

Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl
Friday, January 4 at 9 p.m. ET

The second Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl will be held in the Home Depot Center in Los Angeles immediately following the Under Armour All-America Game.

While the game does not feature any committed Ohio State Recruits, RB Corn Elder will be playing. This Tennessee native is considering the Buckeyes in addition to several other schools. It is widely believed he is leaning toward UCLA.

A surprise came to the Buckeye community on Christmas this year when 2014 Cleveland Glenville recruit Marcelys Jones informed Urban Meyer and the OSU coaching staff that he was selecting the Buckeyes for his college career. The staff had been active recruiting without a bowl game to prepare for until the recruiting dead period began. The Glenville offensive lineman is a big 6’4” 325 lbs. power house that is hopefully just the first or a number of Tarblooder’s the staff hopes to get commitments from.

2013 Quarterback Luke Morgan To Walk-on

Ohio State’s 2013 class continues to grow although this latest recruit won’t be shown in the commitment lists on most recruiting websites, Luke Morgan from Lebanon Ohio is going to be a preferred walk-on. The 6’2” 200 lbs. quarterback joins fullback William Houston and receiver Devlin McDaniel as walk-ons for this next season. With Ohio State’s scholarship allotment diminished due to NCAA violations, walk-ons are helpful to keep the roster deep.

The 6’3” 220 lbs. starting defensive tackle from Ohio State, Johnathan Hankins, is leaving after three years to enter the NFL draft. He is considered a first round pick and the most sought after Buckeye of the current crop of eligible pro players. As a junior he had 55 tackles and 4 for a loss after an incredible sophomore season with 67 tackles and 11 for loss.

The list of people Hankins wants to thank includes Jim Tressel, Jim Heacock, Urban Meyer, Mike Vrabel and strength coach Mickey Marotti. He thanked Jim Tressel and Jim Heacock for recruiting him and giving him a chance to be a part of the Buckeye program. Hankins was considered a late addition after Sharif Floyd selected Florida over Ohio State near the end of the recruiting season.

The 6’2” 175lbs corner back from Massillon Ohio has been on the Ohio State campus for an official visit and committed to coach Urban Meyer and his staff today according to Massillon Washington head coach Jason Hall. Once a Michigan commitment, he visited the Buckeyes for The Game against the Wolverines and came away more impressed with the Buckeyes. He was the 2nd best rated recruit in Michigan’s class before he decided to look around a little bit. A possible wide receiver in addition to corner back, Conley was still planning to visit Michigan before he made his decision on OSU this week.

Ohio State v Michigan 2012

Michigan football travels to Columbus this weekend to take on the undefeated Buckeyes who hope to close out their year without a loss. In Urban Meyers first year with the team, the bowl ineligible team hopes to make a case for a top ranking at the end of the year by going undefeated during the regular season. Michigan can still sneak into the Big Ten Championship game depending on how Nebraska plays against Iowa this weekend.
