Meyer’s Offense Got A Speedy Receiver When Terry McLaurin Committed To Ohio State Football

The news of Cathedral's 3-star receiver Terry McLaurin committing to Ohio State football has been the recent headline in the world of college football. It was back on June 9th when Terry McLaurin attended a Buckeyes camp and Urban Meyer, the Ohio State football coach frankly told the Cathedral senior receiver that he did not know too much about him. However, McLaurin proved his word by clocking in the 40-yard dash at 4.43 seconds. So even Urban Meyer could not help praise McLaurin and tell him that he was among the fastest guys he had ever seen, which was really a tremendous compliment.

However, before McLaurin earned an offer, he was given some homework by Meyer. Meyer wanted McLaurin to work on getting in and out of his cuts quicker and smoother. From a maturity standpoint, working on his cuts was tougher for McLaurin since he thought he had done quite well at the camp to be made an offer. Nonetheless, he internalized that and got to work the day after. Catching 200 passes and running routes in a single day was his goal. McLaurin successfully met the challenge and after visiting a Buckeyes camp for a second time on Friday, he finally earned the offer and accepted it on Sunday night.

In just four days, Terry McLaurin committing to Ohio State football marked the third commitment for the state. Overall, McLaurin is now the thirteenth commit for the 2014 recurring class for Ohio State. McLaurin was desperate to earn an offer from Ohio State and he succeeded by putting his speed on display. The way he took the coaching points really impressed the coaches and he bettered himself using them.

The 175-pound, 6-foot receiver had narrowed his choices not only to Ohio State, but Missouri and Purdue as well. While being interviewed by Steve Wiltfong of 247Sports.com, McLaurin explained why he chose Ohio State over the other two finalists. For McLaurin, Urban Meyer is a legend who according to the young receiver, will go down in college football history as one of the best, and McLaurin wanted to get a chance to play for him. McLaurin was looking for to play for Meyer as a once in a lifetime opportunity. In fact, even before McLaurin talked to Meyer, the fact that Meyer had won two national titles appealed to him.

McLaurin was then sold on the straight-forward approach of Meyer. McLaurin claimed that he felt that he would make a good fit for the spread offense of the Buckeyes. He also said that he was aware of the fact that Percy Harvin, who is currently playing for the Seattle Sawhawks at Florida, and several other NFL receivers, had been coached by Meyer as well. McLaurin said that his game was similar to that of Harvin and that Meyer planned to use him as a slot receiver.

Initially, the Buckeyes were not lucky enough to get some target receivers to commit. However, once McLaurin committed to Ohio State football, Meyer's offense has now become more dangerous with the addition of the speedy receiver.
