A coach with great players
always looks smarter than one without that talent. The 2 keys to winning in
college football are 1-Get great players and 2-Teach them to become even
better.
What's wrong with the Weis led Notre Dame Fighting Irish
and can they compete this year?
Bill Smith: ND has depended on a hamburger chain to tell
them which players are the best. That is why there are so many McDonald's All
Americans on ND but the players seldom work out. A coach with great players
always looks smarter than one without that talent. The 2 keys to winning in
college football are 1-Get great players and 2-Teach them to become even
better. ND has done very little of the first and nothing of the second key over
the last 10 years.
Eric Geier: Weis just needs time to adjust to the college
game and being a head coach. I think this year they will come out stronger but
will still have their struggles. I predict another two to three years before
the Irish are relevant again.
Ryan Leonardo: They are in a true re-building stage. Some
schools are lucky enough to reload, and Notre Dame isn't one of them. The top
recruits would rather go to Wisconsin, Ohio State,
or Michigan State, to name a few. They don't seem to
have the swagger that they used to, but Weis will be there a long time and
should turn it around.
Steve Patterson: Weis has had one great class after another
come into the program and last year should have been the year those players
started to dominate lesser opponents but it did not happen. I don’t think a
great NFL coordinator makes a great college coach unless he can inspire and
relate well with the college player.
