Ohio State football: Clifford faces two misdemeanor assault charges

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Ohio State defensive back Eugene Clifford will be arraigned this morning in Hamilton County Municipal Court on two misdemeanor assault charges, court records show.

According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, which cited police reports, Clifford on Friday punched two employees of the Holy Grail sports bar in the face while the employees were trying to break up a fight.

Court records show Clifford was arrested, posted $248 bond and was released later Friday. The charges are both first-degree misdemeanors, each punishable by up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.

This is not the first time Clifford has been in trouble. He was cited for marijuana possession in March 2007, while still at Cincinnati Colerain High School, and paid a $105 fine.

In December, he was suspended from the national-title game for violating an unspecified team rule. He also was one of several players who coach Jim Tressel held out of practice during spring drills for unknown reasons.

A Cincinnati police spokesman and Ohio State officials did not return calls last night. Nobody answered the phone at the Holy Grail, located just east of the University of Cincinnati campus.

Clifford, a Parade All-American in high school, played in four games last season and made eight tackles but was awarded a medical redshirt.

Tough love, aka "get outta my locker room"

Last year, just prior to the BCS National Championship game, we had a bit of bad news. It was referred to as "a violation of team rules" and was never fully explained. Needless to say, Eugene Clifford was suspended for the game.

In my world, missing out on the biggest game of the year would certainly grab my attention. I'd make sure I was on the straight path after that.

Clifford, though....ehhh, not so much. The backup safety has been charged with two counts of misdemeanor assault and by the time you read this, he will have been arraigned on both counts.

Even if it were his first offense, I'd have a tough time with this...assault is not an accident. But it's not his first offense, so the Lllllloyd Carr method of ignoring it will not stand here.

Now is not the time to sit back and hope Clifford learns. Now is not the time to make him run the steps at the stadium. Now is not the time to make him sit out the first series of a game.

Now is the time to show him the door. It's obvious the kid has issues and he needs to deal with them. But do it on someone else's dime. We could open up another scholarship for 2009 by dumping what is an almost guaranteed head case.

Jim Tressel has shown forgiveness in times past with other players, but he has also cut them loose when they do not show appreciation for the position they are in.

Most people point to Maurice Clarett as the perfect example of lawlessness at Ohio State. I point to him as an example of the coaching staff appropriately removing a cancer BEFORE it spreads. Keep in mind, dear readers, that Clarett was immediately suspended from the team when his car was discovered with all the goodies inside. He never saw the field again. The dude was NOT a Buckeye when he decided to play Tony Montana.

Troy Smith is an even better example. He made a dumb mistake and paid his dues for it. And you can bet your bottom dollar that Tressel told him he had no more chances left. And look how he handled it.

Sorry, Eugene. When you wear the scarlet and gray, I'll support you. But we can't have any repeat performances of trouble like this. I hope you get things back on track and are able to play college football again soon.

But not in my town. Beat it, son.

Eugene Clifford Doesn’t Like Being a Buckeye

Who, me?

Not pleased with the Wolverines taking the Fulmer Cup lead over the Buckeyes last week, defensive back Eugene Clifford got into a little trouble of his own over the holiday weekend. And by trouble, we mean punching random dudes in the face:

According to police, Clifford hit two Holy Grail employees who were trying to break up a fight early Friday at the Corryville tavern.

He’s due in court Monday morning for his arraignment on the two misdemeanor assault charges. These latest charges goes nicely with the game suspension he earned prior to the LSU game as well as the little incident this spring.

I know Tressel runs a family affair, but there comes a point in time when you’ve got to cut a guy loose. Is that time here for Clifford?

Eugene Clifford in trouble again

Eugene Clifford (allegedly) thinks Ohio State is underrepresented in the Fulmer Cup.

Eugene Clifford, a backup cornerback for Ohio State and former Colerain High School football standout, is facing assault charges after allegedly punching two men in the face.

According to police, Clifford hit two Holy Grail employees who were trying to break up a fight early Friday at the Corryville tavern. No further information about the brawl was available.

Sad turn of events for Clifford. If you remember, Clifford was suspended for that game in January that I don’t feel like talking about. His move to safety for this upcoming season was supposed to signal a turnaround for the former Colerain HS prep star. However, Clifford seems to be in the thick of it again, buttressing his marijuana possession rap sheet (in HS) and (presumed) positive drug tests in December 2007 and April 2008 with likely assault charges.

I’m also hearing that this may be it for Clifford, and that he may be on his way out of the program. Indeed, rumors like this were picking up over the past month that Clifford may have had one foot out the door. With this most recent run-in with the law, there’s more and more speculation that Clifford won’t be joining the fold for the 2008 season after all. Of course, all of this is innuendo at the moment.

It’s a shame this had to happen. I hope he turns it around, be it at Ohio State or elsewhere.
