Buckeyes land running back from Florida
Sunday,  June 22, 2008 6:36 PM
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Carlos Hyde, a running back from Florida, today became the 19th commitment to Ohio State's 2009 recruiting class. Hyde, 6 feet 1, 235 pounds, could not be reached immediately for comment, but his mother Dermidra Hyde confirmed the news.

"He is very excited about this, and he's really looking forward to playing for Ohio State," she said. "All he could talk about was how nice and pretty the campus is and how he can't wait to be a Buckeye."

She spoke to The Dispatch by telephone from her home in Cincinnati. Her son, who visited OSU over the weekend, lives with her mother in Naples, Fla., where he was being sought by the big three in that state -- Florida, Miami and Florida State -- along with many others schools.

Hyde is a power back along the lines of current Buckeye Chris "Beanie" Wells, and recruiting analyst Bill Kurelic believes Hyde could slide into the void nicely should Wells opt to head for the NFL after his upcoming junior season.

"Carlos is certainly one of the better big backs in the country in this recruiting year," Kurelic said.

Sources: Hyde Commits To Ohio State

Sources tell Scout.com that Carlos Hyde offered his verbal commitment to be a Buckeye Sunday afternoon, giving Ohio State 19 members so far for the class of 2009. Hyde is the second running back to verbal to the Buckeyes this year.

The Ohio State recruiting class of 2009 has grown to 19. Sources confirmed to Scout.com that Carlos Hyde committed Sunday, as he hinted he might in earlier interviews.

A four-star prospect from Naples, Fla., Hyde is rated the No. 1 fullback in the nation, but he told BuckeyeSports.com in a previous interview that the Buckeye coaching staff plans to use him as a running back, a la current Buckeye Chris “Beanie” Wells and a long line of former Buckeyes such as All-Americans Eddie George, Keith Byars and Jim Otis.

Given the current makeup of the verbal OSU class of ’09, the 6-0, 225-pound Hyde could be “Mr. Inside” while the role of “Mr. Outside” goes to Jordan Hall, a 5-9, 185-pound, four-star running back from Jeannette, Pa., who committed to Ohio State in April.

Ohio State also is known to be in pursuit of at least one more running back for this class, namely five-star prospect Jaamal Berry of Miami, Fla.

Hyde has done little to keep his affection for the Buckeyes a secret. He told NoleDigest.com in March, “Ohio State was a dream offer,” and revealed that he nearly committed upon receiving it.

He told BuckeyeSports.com in June that his visit would likely yield a commitment, and Sunday he followed through.

Hyde is the 12th Buckeye recruit for 2009 to garner at least four stars in Scout’s newly updated rankings.
