What began as a weekend of hope turned into a week of celebration for Aurora, Ohio, two-way standout Adam Bellamy. The future defensive tackle in college ended the suspense Tuesday afternoon and issued a verbal commitment to the Ohio State Buckeyes.

It is amazing how much things can change in the course of 48 hours.

On Sunday afternoon, Adam Bellamy was showing his skills to the Ohio State coaching staff while on campus for a summer camp. Although he already held offers from the likes of Michigan, Michigan State, Indiana and Cincinnati, among others, the three-star prospect had his eyes set on earning at least one more offer.

Returning home to Aurora, Ohio, Bellamy was left puzzling over his own future. If an offer from the Buckeyes was not forthcoming, it would be time to start exploring other options more closely while still holding out hope for an OSU offer.

It was Monday afternoon, then, that Bellamy received a message telling him to call OSU head coach Jim Tressel. Upon doing so, Tressel told Bellamy that a written scholarship offer was in the mail and on its way to his house.

Finally, the offer he had been dreaming of was on its way. Now, one day later and two days removed from his performance at the camp, Bellamy has informed BuckeyeSports.com that he will be verbal commitment No. 17 for OSU's class of 2009.

"I just got off the phone with (OSU head) coach (Jim) Tressel and I gave him a verbal commitment," Bellamy told BuckeyeSports.com. "He said it's a great day for the Buckeyes and he's glad to have me on board."

Ranked as the No. 23 offensive guard in the nation by Scout.com, Bellamy has experience on both sides of the ball. At 6-4, 275 pounds, Bellamy is being targeted by the Buckeyes as a run-stopping defensive tackle who can plug the trenches.

Check back later with BuckeyeSports.com for more comments from Bellamy.

Adam Bellamy becomes commitment no. 17

Adam Bellamy
Ohio State extended an offer to Aurora HS product Adam Bellamy after an impressive showing in camp on Sunday. For Bellamy, it was the offer he always wanted and was seen walking around with an Ohio State shirt soon after he got the offer. All that really was stopping him from committing immediately was the time necessary to talk it over with the folks. With nothing holding him back, Adam Bellamy committed to the Buckeyes just recently, becoming the 17th commitment in what promises to be another stacked recruiting class for Ohio State. Bellamy noted that everything about Ohio State just seemed overwhelmingly positive, from the coaching staff and the way they approach things to the facilities they have on campus.

Bellamy projected at either an offensive guard at college or a defensive tackle. For Ohio State’s staff, though, he will be a run-stopper in the Buckeyes’ interior defense down the road, and should be a nice compliment in the 2009 class to the veritable superhoss in John Simon. That said, Bellamy has expressed that he is just fine playing wherever the staff needs him.

The commitment is a welcome detriment to the University of Michigan, who offered Bellamy on June 2nd. Indeed, he was planning on taking a visit up to Ann Arbor in the upcoming days, but will likely decide against it.

As always, we love players coming to Ohio State who aspire to be Buckeyes. Further, we always welcome players with the kind of mean streak and hustle Bellamy has, as seen in these highlights.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Adam Bellamy was putting some young football players through their paces, urging them to give their all during a youth camp Monday in Aurora, Ohio, when his high school coached beckoned him.

Bellamy, a senior-to-be defensive lineman for Aurora, had just given his all the day before at Ohio State's summer camp. Aurora coach Bob Mihalik said OSU coach Jim Tressel wanted Bellamy to call him.

When he did, Tressel offered him a scholarship. After taking 24 hours to think it over, Bellamy yesterday became the 17th commitment to OSU's 2009 recruiting class. In 48 hours, he'd gone from hoping to gain an offer from the Buckeyes to having one in his hip pocket. His performance in camp made the difference.

"I knew I definitely had to step it up to have a chance of possibly being a Buckeye," said Bellamy, 6 feet 4, 278 pounds. "I just approached that camp with my normal mentality: I busted my butt. Then I got lucky and it came true."

Northwestern, Michigan State, Cincinnati, Boston College, Vanderbilt and several Mid-American Conference schools were among those who already had offered him a scholarship. But OSU and Michigan were showing increased interest, and three days before he had planned to visit Michigan, he committed to OSU.

"I'm honored to have this chance," said Bellamy, whom Bucknuts recruiting analyst Bill Kurelic had rated as the 18th overall prospect in the state before the round of summer camps.

"Six months ago, I had no idea this could happen. I was really jacked up then just knowing that a couple of schools were looking at me.

"It just exploded here in the last few months. Now that I have given Ohio State my verbal (commitment), a lot of weight is off my back. I can kind of calm down and have fun this summer."

On June 8, Bellamy went to the OSU campus to show his skills to the coaching staff, then received a scholarship offer from coach Jim Tressel the next day and decided to commit June 10. He is verbal commitment No. 17 for OSU's freshman class of 2009.
