Corey Brown Commits to Ohio State

The Buckeyes shocking recruiting pace, along with their recent success in neighboring Pennsylvania, continued today as Pittsburgh athlete Corey Brown committed. Brown is a prep star at Gateway, a Pittsburgh area school that is also home to Dorian Bell.

Brown is a standout wide receiver and cornerback, which is just the type of flexibility Coach Tressel loves. Rivals.com rates Brown as a 4-star athlete and #73 in the country overall. Scout.com also has him at 4-stars and as one of the top 10 cornerbacks in the nation.

Brown held over 30 offers from some of the nation's top programs, including, Michigan, Miami, Tennessee, Penn State, West Virginia and Rutgers. He strongly considered hometown Pittsburgh before ultimately choosing the Buckeyes.

BROWN COMMITS TO OHIO STATE

Posted by mvuk

Jim Tressel and Ohio State gets another recruiting victory in Western Pennsylvania. Just minutes ago, 4-star Gateway wide receiver Corey Brown gave a verbal commitment to Ohio State. Brown selected the Buckeyes over Dave Wannstedt and Pitt. After visiting the Ohio State campus this past weekend, Brown knew that Ohio State was it for him. Brown will join 5-star teammate Dorian Bell playing college football at Ohio State. Brown is the #3 ranked player in the state by Pantherlair.com.

Western Pa. player on Ohio State's roster:
Rory Nichol,  TE     (Beaver High School)

Terrelle Pryor,   QB    (Jeannette High School)

Next Year:
Corey Brown, CB  (Gateway High School)

Gateway's Corey Brown Verbals to Ohio State

Posted by Joshua Funk June 23, 2008 19:12PM

MONROEVILLE, Pa. - Jim Tressel might as well set up a permanent headquarters somewhere in the western half of Pennsylvania.

Lately, he's been landing some big names, and Monday afternoon, he added another.

Gateway's top returning receiver, Corey Brown, verbally committed to Ohio State this afternoon at a news conference, according to Mike White of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Brown had more than 30 Division-1 offers in all, and had at least 1 offer from each of the 6 major BCS conferences, just like his teammate Dorian Bell, who verbally committed to Ohio State earlier this year.

Last season, Brown hauled in 20 passes for 470 yards and 3 touchdowns, including an 8-yard touchdown reception in the Gators' thrilling overtime WPIAL championship game against Central Catholic.

He averaged 23.5 yards per reception and 36.2 receiving yards per contest in 2007.

A third member of Gateway's 2009 recruiting class is also receiving quite a load of attention, and that's offensive lineman Colin Rodkey. Rodkey is a third Division-1 prospect who could wind up at a high profile college.

Ohio State's landing of Brown means the Buckeyes have landed three top WPIAL football recruits for their 2009 class.

Gateway's Bell is the 14th-ranked player in the nation by some scouting services, and is only one of two 5-star linebackers in the nation, according to Rivals.com.

The other top WPIAL player, Jeannette's Jordan Hall, scored 32 touchdowns last season, helping Jeannette win PIAA gold.

College football: Buckeyes pick up another pair of recruits
Monday,  June 23, 2008 3:47 PM
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Ohio State's football recruiting snowball kept rolling downhill this afternoon when Pennsylvania dual threat Corey Brown picked the Buckeyes, followed moments later by Dublin Scioto defensive back Bradley McDougald.

Brown, a wide receiver and defensive back from Monroeville (Gateway), Pa., became the 21st pledge to OSU's 2009 recruiting class, and McDougald became No.22.

In fact, it's almost as if the Buckeyes were seeing double when they zeroed in on these two, since they are roughly the same size (6 feet 1, 190 pounds) and considered prospects who could play on either side of the ball, though McDougald is a bit faster.

But Brown said he was seeing clearly when he made his decision.

"I picked Ohio State really because of everything you can think of," Brown said by phone. "The academics, the coaches, the facilities, the tradition, the great players they've got now, the way they keep playing for championships --- they've got everything you want up there."

He also became the second player from his school to choose OSU in the last six weeks, joining blue-chip linebacker prospect Dorian Bell.

Brown made his announcement at a mid-afternoon press conference. He had a long list of options, ranging from Michigan, Pittsburgh and Notre Dame to Alabama and West Virginia. In the end he said his final three were OSU, Pitt and Michigan.

He became the fourth out-of-state commitment in four days to choose OSU. Duron Carter, a wide receiver from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., who is the son of former Buckeye All-American Cris Carter, made his decision Friday. Running back Carlos Hyde of Naples, Fla., but originally from Cincinnati, and Louisville (Male), Ky., athlete Justin Green, brother of former OSU defensive lineman Marcus Green, both made up their minds on Sunday.
