Ohio State cornerback Chimdi Chekwa is the Big Ten Player of the Week

Two Ohio State players were named to the Big Ten Conference Player of the Week awards today for their performances in the Saturday match-up against Miami of Florida. Chimdi Chekwa was given the Big Ten’s Defensive Player of the Week award while kicker Devin Barclay was awarded a share of the Special Teams Player of the Week award.

Chimdi Chekwa had a great game against Miami, intercepting two passes by Miami quarterback Jacory Harris. He also broke up two passes while making six tackles and a tackle for loss. The defensive of Ohio State didn’t allow Marshall to score last weekend and only allowed the #12 team in the country, Miami, to score 10 points in their second week out-of-conference battle. Chekwa opted to return for his senior season with the Scarlet and Gray after considering a jump to the NFL last year.

Devin Barclay tied the OSU school record with five field goals and had a chance to set a new record but missed his sixth attempt after suffering from legs cramps. Barclay scored 18 of 36 points for the Buckeyes, hitting field goals from 24,41, 21, 24 and 24 yards. Barclay replaced starter Aaron Pettrey last season when Pettrey went down with a leg injury mid-way through the season. A former MLS star, Barclay has been incredibly accurate from short distances allowing freshman Drew Basil to kick longer field goals and kickoffs.
