A December Visit to Columbus

Recruiting analysts heard about a mid December visit of 2012 Catholic Memorial linebacker Camren Williams as he was arriving in Columbus with his family on December 12th. At 6’2” 215 lbs. and rated the 8th best inside linebacker in the country, Ohio State was eager to get Williams on campus to show him and his family everything the program has to offer.

Williams began to re-evaluate is commitment to Penn State as their head coach was yet to arrive from the NFL and many other recruits were switching their commitments. On the visit, he got to see the academic and the athletic facilities. He also met the coaches including Luke Fickell, Mike Vrabel and Urban Meyer. Having Everett Withers on the Buckeye staff was also helpful as William’s older brother played for coach Withers at North Carolina. At the end of his visit, he was still a member of Penn State’s class.

Switching from Penn State to Ohio State

A second unofficial visit to Ohio State in January was enough for Williams to make the decision to switch his verbal commitment from Penn State to Ohio State. While on campus he committed to the Buckeyes and call Penn State with the bad news. In addition on his second visit, Williams brought along Penn State commit Armani Reeves who also eventually switched and signed with OSU.

2012 Ohio State Linebacker Class

Urban Meyer wanted to upgrade the linebackers at Ohio State when he took the job and in Mid January he was able to get the commitments from two great linebackers in Williams and David Perkins. Perkins is a great athlete with speed similar to Ryan Shazier. Both Williams and Perkins will get looks in the Fall as the corps is thin with graduations and attrition. Also in the 2012 class at linebacker are Jamal Marcus, Josh Perry and Luke Roberts. Through the rough season and NCAA investigations, Perry and Roberts have stayed firm with their commitments and now find themselves in one of the best classes in the country.
